Manuscript Evaluation
If you are unsure about the level of editing required, the manuscript evaluation is an economical, perfect first step for bringing your novel up to the next level. While not as in-depth as a developmental edit, it provides insights into major elements such as plot, character arcs, pacing, backstory, and storytelling effectiveness. This is presented as an editorial letter and no changes are made to the manuscript.
Developmental Edit
Developmental editing, also known as substantial editing, focuses on the story's foundations, examining its structure, strengths, and weaknesses. It addresses major aspects such as plot and subplots, point of view, narrative arc, characterization, setting, pacing, dialogue, backstory, and flashbacks.
The Developmental Edit is presented as an editorial letter, with in-manuscript comments and actionable suggestions.
Line Edit
Line editing is carried out after developmental editing when all the big picture items such as plot, structure and characterisation have been addressed.
Line editing explores the manuscript at sentence level, examining the flow of the words, the cadence and rhythm, the clarity and coherence. It addresses important elements such as point of view, pacing, tenses and dialogue, whilst carefully preserving the author’s voice.
The Line Edit is presented as an editorial letter, with in-manuscript comments and actionable suggestions.
